How to Join

New members are welcomed and encouraged to join 4-H at any time, however there are certain privileges and opportunities that come with registering by certain dates. Please see page 19 of the Enrollment Guide & Family Handbook for specific dates.

Steps to Joining 4-H

1. Review the Enrollment Guide & Family Handbook and use as a resource throughout the year. It contains general information about 4-H, activities and events at the county, state, and national level, general enrollment, and project enrollment. Additional resources for review:

2.  Select a club that works for your family.

  • Review page 4 of the Enrollment Guide & Family Handbook to identify a club that you’re interested in.

  • Contact one of the club’s leaders to let them know you are interested in joining the club and confirm the meeting day, time, and location.

  • Go to the club monthly meeting and introduce yourself to the leaders.

3. Select the project(s) that you are interested in for the year.

  • Review page 32 of the Enrollment Guide & Family Handbook for steps on how to select a project.

  • Consider the following:

    • Descriptions of the projects found on pages 34-49 of the Enrollment Guide & Family Handbook

    • Leadership for the project may be provided at a county, club, or independent level (driven by the youth and their parent/guardian).

      • Youth can participate in a project at one or multiple of those levels (county, club, or independent).

      • Projects offered at the county level are found on pages 25-31 of the Enrollment Guide & Family Handbook

      • Check with your club leaders for the projects currently offered at a club level. This will vary from club to club.

    • Membership enrollment as it relates to projects on page 20-21 of the Enrollment Guide & Family Handbook

    • High-quality, research-based literature is provided in many project areas. It’s a valuable resource to guide youth through their hands-on project learning experiences and provides teaching resources for youth and adult volunteer leaders. See the Project Literature Order Form for additional details.

4. Enroll in 4-H Youth Development using 4HOnline.

  • To enroll in 4HOnline you need a computer, internet access, a valid e-mail address, and a web browser. You can enroll from a home computer or from a public access computer, such as those available at your local library.

  • Instructions for Enrolling in 4HOnline as a NEW family in Washington County

  • 4HOnline FAQ for Members

  • You will select your desired club and projects during the enrollment process.

  • When all components of step 5 are fulfilled, your community club’s leaders and then UW-Extension staff will approve your enrollment. After your enrollment is approved, you can log back in to 4HOnline to make changes to project enrollment (within date guidelines), contact information, and the health form.

5. Submit the following to your community club’s leaders.

6. Your community club’s leader will get you your project literature and green record book binder.

  • You can access the record book pages on our record book pages or get hard copies at the UW-Extension office.

7. Watch your email for the bi-monthly 4-H newsletter called the “Cloverline” for information on events and activities and other opportunities going on in the 4-H program.

8. Have fun!
